The popular frozen Margarita turned 50 last year, many years after the original. It is also served straight up, on the rocks, spicy,bubbly and as mocktails. It was interesting to learn that Margarita’s go beyond the frozen type. These are only a few of the possibilities of the origin of the libation, one of the top cocktails in the United States. Still, according to Emily Arseneau, a bartender and brand manager for Rémy-Cointreau’s Collectif 1806, the year 1948 seems to stick.”
In all likelihood, the drink was an amalgam of moments and ingredient inspirations.
Or, according to an article by Amy Zavatto in, “It isn’t exactly possible to pin the invention of the Margarita to a specific date. He named the drink Margarita for Marjorie. He concocted a drink using Tequila, Triple Sec, lemon juice, ice shavings and salt for Ziegfeld dancer, Marjorie King who had an allergy to spirits, but not to Tequila. Or, was it invented in 1938 by restaurateur Carlos Herrera, owner of Rancho la Gloria. Is it a takeoff of the Brandy Daisy, a drink popular in the latter part of the 19th century. Depending upon the source, the story is different, and recipes are as varied. The beginnings of the libation are unclear. One who is curious about the history of familiar food and drink, I got to work. At first, I thought that February is also an odd time to celebrate the Margarita then again, there are those that live in places that enjoy beach weather this time of year, needing a refreshing and cold drink keep them cool, while we are bundled up here in the Northeast. Margarita Day in February? Well, I am thinking frozen Margaritas. February 22 lists two, “National Cook a Sweet Potato Day” and “Margarita Day.” I thought February is an odd time of the year to be celebrating the root vegetable enjoyed during the fall holiday season.
